When you lose weight fast, everyone tells you that it is just water weight. Water weight is the first thing you lose. They rain down on your parade! They are not the only ones though. When you step on the scale while bloated, you blame water weight for the scale showing that you have gained weight.
However, both people and the scale are correct. It is water weight. Water weight occurs when fluid accumulates in your tissues, causing them to swell. How to lose this awful water weight so you can stop feeling so awful?
If it makes you feel any better, you haven’t really gained or lost weight! If you have lost weight and scale shows you have gained it, it is just water weight, which is temporarily stored between your skin and organs. To avoid falling victim water weight, know what causes water weight.
1. Carbs and Salt
You need to cut down on both carbs and salt if you want to decrease your chances of retaining water weight. When you go on a diet, the first thing you do is restrict your carb intake. When you lose weight and give yourself a sweet treat, you will experience fluid retention. If your diet contains a lot of salt, cut it out, as sodium binds with water and traps it in your body.
2. Menstruation and Pregnancy
Menstruation — one of the most bothersome and moody times of the month for us women! A week before we are due to get our periods, our hormones start acting up. We begin to retain water. This also results in the breasts becoming tender and the stomach feeling full. Other women may also experience swelling in the legs, arms, face, and pubic area a week before their periods.
Pregnancy causes women to retain water, especially when your due date comes closer. You may also experience swelling in the ankles, hands, or feet. However, you cannot put all the blame on your hormones, as the growing baby in your belly also puts strain on the blood vessels.
3. Hormonal Birth Control and Cortisol
Hormonal birth control also causes water weight. Birth control pills contain estrogen and progestin, which make the female body retain water, but don’t worry, water weight goes away as quickly as it comes.
Cortisol or the stress hormone is responsible for regulating blood sugar levels, balancing metabolism, decreasing inflammation, and creating memories. Increased levels of cortisol can lead to water weight. However, this is not common, but is possible.
When you are sitting down for long durations on a flight or in the car, your muscles will contract, resulting in water collecting in your legs and feet.
5. Medications and Decreased Circulation
Before you take any medication, you can check if one of their symptoms is water weight. Some of the medications that result in water retention include corticosteroids, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, calcium channel blockers, and thiazolidinedione.
When we get older, our circulation system gets older too. It can result in heart failure. The valves in the veins of your legs can collapse a little, causing blood collect in the lower extremities, resulting in water retention.
Water weight is not that bad! You don’t gain or lose weight!
