Don’t get us wrong! Tomatoes offer you tons of benefits. They are 95% water, which is one of the major benefits you receive from eating it. That is just the beginning though. Here are other benefits you receive from eating tomatoes:

  • Lowers high blood pressure
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Converts beta-carotene to vitamin A in the body
  • Lower high cholesterol levels
  • Prevents the formation of blood clots
  • Improves digestion
  • Improves vision
  • Aids in weight loss

With so many benefits, why are we telling you that eating too many tomatoes is a no-no? When we eat too many tomatoes in the name of health, it becomes a major problem. Let’s look at the major disadvantages of eating too many tomatoes:

1. Upset Stomach

Even though tomatoes aid in digestion, they can cause an upset stomach if you begin to eat them in excess. If you suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), tomatoes will cause bloating and worsen your symptoms. An overdose of tomatoes can even lead to diarrhea.

2. Kidney Disease

If you suffer from kidney disease or kidney stones, you should limit your intake of tomatoes. Since tomatoes are rich in potassium, doctors recommend that patients with some form of kidney disease do not consume a lot of tomatoes. Tomatoes are also rich in oxalate, which leads to the development of kidney stones.

3. Acid Reflux

Tomatoes are extremely acidic in nature and eating them in excess can cause acid reflux or heartburn. Malic and citric acids found in tomatoes increase the production of acid, causing gastric reflux. If you already suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), refrain from eating too many tomatoes, as they can worsen your symptoms.

4. Allergies

If you are allergic to histamine, eating tomatoes in excess can lead to an allergic reaction. You can experience an allergic reaction to the fruit in the form rashes, eczema, sneezing, hives, itchy throat, and swelling of the tongue and face.

5. Muscle Cramps

Histamine, a compound found in tomatoes, can cause inflammation in the body and joint pain. This occurs when the immune system reacts with the proteins found in tomatoes. Eating too many tomatoes can also cause arthritis and muscle pain.

6. High Blood Pressure

When you eat more than the recommended amount of tomatoes, it can lead to high blood pressure. However, your blood pressure will only increase if you eat tomatoes in the form of soup or straight from the can. Canned tomatoes and tomato soup contain rich amounts of sodium. Tomatoes in its raw form do not contain high amount of sodium and can actually decrease high blood pressure, but still, you should not exceed the recommended amount.

7. Migraines

If you experience migraines, you should not consume a lot of tomatoes, as they can trigger it. If you eat too many tomatoes, you should limit your intake, as they may be behind your frequent migraine attacks.

Tomatoes are healthy to eat, but the minute you overdo it by eating in excess, tomatoes become unhealthy.
