I think we all know that you shouldn’t follow every beauty and makeup trend that becomes huge, but do we listen? — No! We end up following it anyways, and then years later, when we look at our old pictures, we regret it! “Did We Really Do That?”
We thought it was only wise to tell you about some of the craziest beauty and makeup trends throughout history in case they make a return. Here they are:
1. Goat Hair Unibrows
The ancient Greeks had a thing for unibrows, creating them using goat hair. If a woman had a unibrow, she was considered beautiful and intelligent. Women without unibrows even used dark powder to create caterpillar eyebrows. If this were in fashion now, would you try it?
2. The Middle Ages Said Goodbye to Eyelashes
Nowadays, we look for ways to make our eyelashes full and long, but back in the Middle Ages, women opted to remove them. For some reason, men thought the sexiest thing about a woman’s face was her forehead! Yes, her forehead!
So, women removed their eyelashes to make their forehead the center of attention. And they don’t grow back either, thus making this trend even more frightening. Can you imagine walking around without any eyelashes?
3. Blacker the Teeth, the Better You Look
We are too busy going to the dentist and using toothpaste to whiten our teeth, but back in the day, black teeth were all the rage. This beauty trend originated in Japan where women drank a black dye combined with cinnamon and other spices to make their teeth black. This trend is never going to come again, as the country banned it in the 1870s. Keep getting those teeth whitened!
4. Painful Makeup
In England, in the Victorian Era, the queen banned makeup so women resorted to some weird ways to make their cheeks rosy. They bit their lips to draw blood and pinched their cheeks to achieve rosy glow. They really took the saying, “Beauty is Pain” a little too literally.
5. Use Arsenic to Achieve the Perfect Complexion
Can you believe that women actually ate arsenic to achieve the perfect complexion? Back in the day, eating arsenic was all the rage! Even though arsenic is deadly, women willingly consumed due to its ability to even out the complexion and whiten the skin.
Most women also went bald because of this trend, as it caused their hair to fall out. Once you started gulping down arsenic, you couldn’t stop because stopping meant troubling side effects. You just had to drink it and pretend it is tasty if you wanted to keep the side effects at bay!
6. The Pale White Look
The 18th century saw women combining lead and vinegar and powdering their face with it to create the pale, white look. The lead would even out their skin and eliminate freckles from their face. With time, this solution caused their skin to break down and led to scarring. It made them sick as well.
