If your once beautiful, voluminous, and lustrous hair has lost its beauty, you need to take steps to transform it back to its old self. But what can you do to prevent hair damage? You can do the following five things to prevent further hair damage:
1. Clean Your Scalp
You can use dry shampoos, but do not make it a habit of doing so. Dry shampoos are a convenient solution when you do not have time to shower, but they can never replace shampoos.
Shampoos clean the bacteria on your scalp, which dry shampoos cannot do. You should shampoo your hair at least two times each week. However, the frequency of how much you shampoo your hair depends on the texture of your hair. If you have chemically or color treated hair, opt for a milder shampoo.
2. Wear a Different Hairstyle
You should not wear the same hairstyle every day. The reason you need to try changing your hairstyle is because it can damage your hair and cause breakage. For instance, if you wear a rubber band in your hair to tie your hair and your hair remains in that hairstyle for most of the day, it will cause breakage.
The same goes for weaves and extensions. The same hairstyle places unnecessary pressure on your strands, causing the hair follicle to become weak and leading to hair loss.
3. Handle Your Strands Carefully
Even though you cannot repair the damage that has already occurred, you can prevent further damage to your hair by handling your strands carefully. When your hair is wet, you should brush it or rub it with a towel to dry it. If you are blow drying your hair, you need to be careful not to pull at your strands with the brush.
4. Keep Heat Away from Your Hair
If you spend too much time outdoors, you need to invest in UVA and UVB protective primer. Apply the protective primer through your wet hair before you use a hair dryer to dry it. If you need to use a curling iron or straightener, you need to use a multipurpose protective spray on your hair before you style it.
5. Always Use Conditioner
You should always use conditioner whenever you shower. Conditioner will strengthen and coat your hair. In return, this will prevent hair damage. You should buy a deep-conditioning conditioner that contains protein and rice extract, as it will repair and strengthen the hair shaft.
You should use the conditioner at least once every week, if not every time you take a shower. If you do not want to use conditioner every time you shower, you need to use a lightweight oil-based spray or serum instead.
6. Snip Off Split Ends
You should always snip off damaged or split ends every six weeks depending on how long your hair is. This will prevent your strands from fraying.
If your hair has become damaged or you fear it might experience damage in the future, you need to start taking these measures to protect it from hair damage.
